Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (1996)

New Zealand //

Gran Canaria is the largest of the Canary Islands. It has beautiful mountains and some of the roads scared me to pieces. Didn't scare the busses jogging along, though. Scared me again when I got stuck behind a bus that had to move around some corner by an inch a minute. Hiking must be great in those mountains.

The dunes at Maspalomas are impressing. And hot. Incredible waves of sand make you feel like Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.

In a valley tucked between moderately high mountains you find a bird park, mainly for parrots. Created with lots of love and a perfect part of the countryside. Amazing.

Unlike Lanzarote, I didn't have the feeling that tourism and Gran Canaria fit together. Too many high-rise hotels and bungalow villages. The south of Gran Canaria seems to belong to Europeans only (streets are named after tourism companies). I don't know, not even in the northern parts of Gran Canaria I had the feeling that the island was balanced. Many people like it, though.
